Consider the full differential
- Abuse, neglect, intimidation, or coercive control.
- A child’s direct experience of frightening, inconsistent, or harmful care.
- Ordinary developmental preference, conflict, or transition stress.
- A parent’s absence, substance use, untreated illness, or repeated unreliability.
- A mutual pattern in which both adults contribute to the child’s distress.
- A combination of these factors rather than a single explanation.
Do not use a behavior label to erase a report
A child may repeat an adult phrase and still have a genuine safety concern. A parent may also describe a real interference behavior while the child has independent reasons for distance. Both observations need careful assessment; neither cancels the other automatically.
What a careful record sounds like
Instead of “the other parent brainwashed the child,” record who said what, when, where, who was present, what happened before and after, and what alternative explanations remain. Include information that complicates your preferred account.
Get the right kind of help
Safety questions belong with an appropriately trained advocate or clinician; custody and evidence questions belong with an attorney; evaluation questions belong with a qualified evaluator. A checklist or Case Builder export can organize observations, but it cannot resolve the differential.
