← Back to Learn

If you are re-examining an old family story.

You are allowed to be curious about your own history without being assigned an answer about who was right.

Questions you can ask at your own pace

  • What do I remember directly, and what did I learn from other people?
  • What feelings come up when I imagine contact, distance, or a boundary?
  • Were there safety reasons for the distance that still matter now?
  • What would a low-pressure first step look like, if I want one?
  • Who could support me without telling me what conclusion to reach?

There is no required reconciliation

Some estrangements protect people. Some relationships change with time. Some adults choose limited contact, structured contact, or no contact. Curiosity does not obligate you to reconnect, and reconnection does not require you to erase harm.

If you decide to reach out

Consider a brief message with no demand for a reply: “I have been thinking about you. I care about you and I am open to hearing what you want, at your pace.” A therapist can help you plan for different responses.
